Winter markets that keep the Christmas spirit strong

This time of year, the most cynical humbuggers reiterate that everyone’s favorite holiday has become a shop-a-palooza. The best retort? A remedy of hot cocoa with a non-optional candy cane for emergency Christmas spirit transfusion.

In truth, though, consider this list of winter markets in Greater Tampa Bay, where local artisans are making a living by crafting beautiful art, making melodies and preparing scrumptious food. What, if not a little shopping, could better support these talented and deserving creatives?

Merry Witchmas Market

Old Europe’s premier spirituality is back with a vengeance. The Merry Witchmas Market aims to support local artists with Wiccan flair. Tarot readers, alchemical curiosities and creative libations will define the Squeeze Courtyard for four magical hours.

Where: 675 30th Ave. N., St. Petersburg

When: 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17

Mrs. Claus Craft Fair

Santa is about at that age when a person decides to start riding a motorcycle with little-to-no experience. The Mrs. Claus Craft Fair — held at the Harley Davidson of New Port Richey — is proof that his wife supports him, though. There will be more than 30 craft vendors, all-you-can-eat French toast for $5, and patrons can take pictures with Santa on a Harley.

Where: 5817 State Road 54, New Port Richey

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18

Winter Wonderland Holiday Market

Go big or go home. The Winter Wonderland Market is an all-in market and event for Christmas enthusiasts in GTB. Holiday goods, sweets, decorations and hot cocoa are supplemented with rock climbing, axe throwing and a visitable Santa. Centerpoint Church hosts the event.

Where: 1720 S. St. Cloud Road, Valrico

When: 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18

Holiday Shuffle

The height of locality, Holiday Shuffle boasts local vendors, local music, local beer and local food. Imports are out of the question. Shuffle is normally a stellar bar and grill, but those who shuffle in on the 18th will find the halls good and decked per the Christmas standard.

Where: 2612 N. Tampa St., Tampa

When: 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18

Christmas Night Market

Some readers need progress no further than “Christmas arts & crafts,” but in case anyone needs convincing, the Ocha Lounge also offers seasonal drinks, live music and something called the “Fat Chick Food Truck.” This market is participating in the Toys for Tots drive, and donors will land a free tea.

Where: 6850 66th St. N., Pinellas Park

When: 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18

Holiday Art Market at Mosi

The beauty of Christmas has not gone unnoticed by artists. This Holiday Art Market will support local creators by hosting their work for sale, and half of the ticket proceeds at $10 per person go to charity. An eggnog-swigging elf could hardly embody the Christmas spirit with better accuracy.

Where: 4801 East Fowler Ave., Tampa

When: 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18

South Tampa Market

This dog-friendly market will play host to more than 25 of Tampa’s own small businesses. Expect cold-brew coffee, juice, boutique clothing and general Florida-lifestyle accessories. What is the “Florida lifestyle?” Only shoppers at the South Tampa Market will know for sure.

Where: 4301 W. John F Kennedy Blvd., Tampa

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19

Dunedin Vegan Market

When: Noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19

Thee Holiday Black Market

The unlikely trio of wings, pudding and coffee add flair to this stylish holiday market. The notoriously tasty Trap Dawg Hot Dogs will also be available amidst seasonal shopping efforts. Patrons can expect fashion, fun and beef franks.

Where: 5407 N. Florida Ave., Tampa

When: 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19

Ocean Air Holiday Market

The Postcard Inn is transforming its beach garden into a winter wonderland complete with more than 12 local vendors, a skating rink and live music. Unlike its namesake, Ocean Air promises to be anything but salty.

When 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30
