Around every corner of Greater Tampa Bay, the best hospitals stand ready to serve patients with next-level health care.
The large urban centers of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater are home to excellent hospitals that are not only the best in the region, but among the very best in the state. Throughout the region’s many smaller cities, hospitals provide expert care with nationally recognized procedures.
World-class review site U.S. News & World Report has recognized several local hospitals. Tampa General Hospital is nationally ranked in five adult specialties, and it is one of several in the area to place high in USNWR’s state and regional rankings. In addition, 19 hospitals throughout the region have earned high performing status for one or more procedures or conditions, according to USNWR.
When it comes to health care, these rankings matter — and they are so much more than a number. Whenever a loved one is in need of treatment, be it routine or intensive, any family wants the absolute best for their loved ones. Going to a highly ranked hospital or treatment center means that those loved ones are in the best possible hands, with the most proven experience and strongest support from technologies, advanced research and innovative practices.
Here is a look at what GTB’s highest ranked hospitals have to offer.
What do U.S. News & World Report rankings mean?
To earn a national ranking in an adult specialty, a hospital must be one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for that particular specialty. If a hospital has a high performing specialty, that means it is in the top 10% of all rated hospitals in the country for that particular specialty.
U.S. News & World Report does not include every hospital in the U.S. in its ratings — only those that “regularly treat complex cases and therefore have the experience to provide high-quality care,” according to its ranking FAQ. So, if USNWR rates a hospital at all, that hospital ranks among the best. If a hospital has a nationally ranked or a high performing specialty, then it is among the best of the best in that specialty.

Tampa General Hospital is a world-class hospital and a leading academic medical center in the region, affiliated with the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine. For the sixth consecutive year, TGH is named among Florida’s top four hospitals.
“Consistency in performance is what is most important as we continue on our journey to become the safest and most innovative academic health system in America,” said John Couris, TGH president and CEO.
