Clothes To Kids Threads the Community Together Through Clothing Donations
Clothes To Kids is supplying children with clothing and confidence throughout Greater Tampa Bay. What began as a passionate idea discussed at a kitchen table has since blossomed into a successful non-profit, with three stores serving the region’s community. To date, Clothes to Kids has distributed over 168,000 wardrobes (and counting). Every year, Clothes to Kids gives away 65,000 pairs of brand new underwear, and now they’re serving more children than ever before.
The Purple Coat
In the early 2000s co-founder Marie McClung volunteered in her sister’s classroom, where a little girl was without a jacket and could not play outside. She quickly went out and bought a purple coat, which the girl gratefully accepted. From that point on Marie was motivated to secure clothing for children in need, and she and co-founder Jode Eye made it their mission. Clothes to Kids may have come from humble beginnings with one purple coat, but it has since grown to serve tens of thousands of school-aged children.
Clothes To Kids Stores
Upon walking into the Tampa store, a kind volunteer greets guests. The space is made for children to feel comfortable. Vibrant clothing graces racks and walls. Youth mannequins are adorned with beautiful outfits. Children have their pick of dresses, uniforms, shoes, jackets, and clothing for every occasion.
Fashion shows are frequent at Clothes to Kids. Children can try on pieces and pose in front of full-length mirrors.
“For us, the ultimate goal is for our kids to leave with clothes they love, feel comfortable in and encourage them to focus on learning and to thrive. It’s pretty special-a shopping trip with us can help with just that!” says Executive Director Jennifer Jacobs.
Best of all, they get the confidence boost they deserve when they walk out the door. Heart is what formed this store and generosity stocked it, but hard work and dedication runs it.
Back To School
Summer is here and school is right around the corner- this is the busiest time of year at Clothes to Kids. $50 provides a week’s worth of clothing to a child in need.
“Our community is truly the heart of ‘sole’ of our work- when you clothe a kid, you change a life,” said Jacobs.
