Young professionals are flocking to Greater Tampa Bay. Job opportunities, desirable weather, proximity to the beaches, access to professional sports and plenty of enriching cultural experiences have contributed to GTB’s growth. Among all US markets, Tampa ranked eighth in percentage gain of millennials in a 2021 CBRE study.
Rising Appeal
Pennsylvania native Heather Lorenz wanted to move south, but never planned to go as far as Florida. A recreation internship with attractive benefits at TradeWinds Island Resort brought her to St. Petersburg six years ago. The Penn State University graduate was immediately drawn to the weather, but discovered the many other benefits and decided to stay.
“From the art-centric downtown to the impressive food scene to the beaches and sporting events, there is so much for people my age,” said 27-year-old Lorenz. “This is an amazing place to live. I can see myself getting married and raising a family here.”
The Birchwood marketing coordinator has found a community through the St. Pete Young Professionals Group (SPYP). As events chair, Lorenz appreciates the opportunity to stay well connected to the next generation of business leaders.
Rising Organizations
SPYP Chair Jess Simon, a client experience officer for Noble Wealth in Clearwater, says membership has grown incrementally from inception, already surpassing last year’s growth. The most significant increase came when young professionals shifted away from dense urban areas during the pandemic. She noticed the mix of up-and-coming and relocating professionals in financial services, data analytics, marine and life sciences and manufacturing positions has made GTB the hub of an economic boom.
Kristy Margiotta, Chair of Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group agrees a diverse group of companies are recruiting and hiring young professionals. The organization’s recent growth has allowed increased opportunities for mentorship, professional education and outreach. In December, they expanded their annual Christmas Tree Lighting into a free family event for the community.
Rising Leaders
After spending four years here, many college students realize how much the area has to offer and stay. The Tampa Bay Chamber offers a Collegiate Leadership Program to retain top talent after graduation. Emerging Leaders of Tampa Bay Director Jill Teeter said the region’s accelerated growth is appealing to young professionals but the personal benefits have been just as much of a draw.
“There are a lot of different pockets in GTB that all have unique vibes and attract diverse populations and interests,” Teeter said. “It is not a one size fits all – there are places and spaces for everyone to feel at home.”
Forbes.com ranked Tampa No. 1 on their list of the Best Places to Live in Florida in 2022.
